Mare Island is actually a
peninsula in the
United States alongside the city of
Vallejo, California, about 23 miles (37 km) northeast of
San Francisco.
On September 16, 1854, Mare Island became the first permanent US naval installation on the
west coastIn 1993 Congress approved the findings of the
Base Realignment and Closure report, leading to the closure of Mare Island Naval Shipyard.
